Environmental and sanitation department is among thirteen departments of Longido district council. Formerly the department established late of 2014 at Longido District council. Department established under Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
VISION.
Ensure community perceive in Health, sanitary and safe environment for human and other living organisms.
MISSION.
The department shall strive that each household understand and exercises sanitary norms, having quality, safe, and attractive environment for healthy life, acquire conserved and protected environment that support human and other living organisms’ life.
STAFFS
Department have high shortage of staffs however work, closely with staffs from Health Department particularly preventive health services section.

WASTE MANAGEMENT
Solid waste generation is approximately 15.2 tonnes per day. The whole amount of solid waste generated accumulate and spread on the environment because there is no specific developed and operating dump site for safe disposal of wastes. Therefore, human and other living organisms heath is endanger as well as leaves environment disgusting.
Liquid waste generated from business premises and households overflow and get into some sensitive areas like water bodies. This is critically worse for the health of organisms and environment aesthetics. Department yet struggles to develop dump site for safe Liquid waste disposal.
Currently there is an area of twenty five acres (25) between Kimokouwa and Eworendeke village planned for dumping site.
To ensure sanitary, hygienic and safe environment
Sensitise community on safe storage and disposal of wastes.
Ensure presence and use of waste storage/disposal site/bins for every household/food premises and institutions.
Sensitise community on construction and use toilets
Presence and functioning wastes dumpsite for district residents.

Monitoring and supervising safe burial services- currently there is sited area for council’s cemetery with size of 25,713 square metres. Divided into social believes existing in the council, i.e. Christianity (59%), Islam (30%) and Pagans (21%).
